Areport from the European Union Intellectual Property Office ( EUIPO ) reveals that digital piracy increased by 3.3% in 2022 . Downloaded television shows, series, movies and manga comics are mainly responsible for this increase.
The EUIPO, based in Alicante, manages the registration of European Union Trademarks (EUTM) and Registered Community Designs (RCD), which provide intellectual property protection in all EU Member States. It also carries Fax Lists out cooperation activities with EU national and regional intellectual property offices and hosts the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights.
This is one of the main conclusions of the study Online Copyright Infringement in the European Union, Films, Music, Publications, Software and TV, 2017-2022 software and television, 2017-2022).
The report shows that piracy, measured by the number of monthly accesses to illegal content per internet user , had been recording a slow decline year after year until 2021, when the trend was reversed. This is the third study published by the EUIPO on the evolution of online copyright infringements in EU Member States and the United Kingdom.
The study examines the number of accesses to pirated films, television, music, software and publications between January 2017 and December 2022 , using various access methods through laptops and mobile phones, such as streaming , downloading, files torrent and online file playback software ( stream ripping ). The new edition includes two types of content not studied before.
This change in trend is mainly due to the growth of television piracy , which represents almost half (48%) of total accesses to infringing sites in the EU in 2022. Other types of pirated content are publications (28%), movies (11%), software (7%) and music (6%).
